Save Scott Reef Sydney: Everything You Need To Know

The Australian Conservation Foundation is replacing preachy lectures with live music and comedy to protect endangered marine life at Scott Reef. Here's what you need to know about the Sydney event.

Australian artists, comedians, and performers are coming together this month for a great cause, appearing in intimate venues across the East Coast to help save Scott Reef.

Located northwest of Cape Leveque, Western Australia, Scott Reef consists of two formations: North Scott Reef and South Reef – the reef system also includes a third formation, the Seringapatam Reef.

In December 2023, Greenpeace reported that Scott Reef is home to at least 29 species of marine mammals, 41 species of birds, and almost 1,000 species of fish, sharks, sea snakes, and many other incredibly unique animals, some of which have never been found anywhere else.

It’s also a habitat for endangered pygmy blue whales, and between North and South Scott Reef is Sandy Islet, a tiny bit of sand where up to a thousand endangered green sea turtles lay their eggs each year.

With all that beauty and life, it’s difficult to imagine anything happening to Scott Reef. However, for years, Woodside – the Perth-based fossil fuel company – has wanted to “drill up to 57 wells at Scott Reef,” per the Conservation Council of WA.

Woodside’s drilling plans are part of its Browse gas export proposal, which would reportedly add “1.6 billion tonnes of carbon pollution into the atmosphere.”

To raise awareness for the Save Scott Reef campaign, the Australian Conservation Foundation has teamed up with a handful of music venues to spread the word. Here’s what you need to know about the Sydney event.

THE CAUSE

This event is part of the Australian Conservation Foundation’s campaign to raise awareness and stop large-scale gas drilling near Scott Reef. And, as many climate events can feel like a lecture, this is an evening that’s been designed to feel like the opposite.

Instead of presenting an educational exercise, the event will feature great music, big laughs, an enjoyable drink on arrival, and an important reason for people to gather and enjoy a night out. The cause will be woven throughout the night, but it isn’t there to be shoved in your face.

It’s two great artists and an exciting host all uniting for a cause worth showing up for.
