After releasing their previous single Go Die In The Woods in October, The Vovos continue their hot streak with the rollicking new single and fun video combo that is Hanahaki Disease, out December 1 but premiering on Pilerats today.
Inspired by the titular fictional ailment, Hanahaki Disease is “a fictional malady caused by unrequited love. Flowers grow inside the lungs of the unlucky sufferer, until petals are coughed up in some kind of hideously cute floral lurgy.”
“The song was written during the lockdowns over zoom calls, one memorable writing session, Ruby was sick with COVID and was on the call for hours as Beth and Ada cleaned up the lyrics. Ada learnt about Hanahaki Disease from her little brother Xav, he made it seem like they were reading Japanese mythology but really it came from fanfiction”, say The Vovos.
Meanwhile, the nostalgic video that anyone who ever went to a school formal will relate to sees the band jamming in a building oozing classic Aussie community centre vibes, with aesthetically pleasing pastels and some contrasting fashion.
The band explains “For the video, we originally wanted all the extras dressed for an 1880s ball with us in 1980s clothes. All the extras are our friends we last minute forced into pastel prom clothes, it actually felt a lot like formal except awesome because it was only people we liked”.
With their sophomore album Lilla Gubben set for a March 2024 release, give Hanahaki Disease a watch and listen a few days ahead of release:
