Premiere: Sarah Mary Chadwick shares new single Let's Fight, new album out this month

The Melbourne-based musician will share her new album, Please Daddy, on January 24th via Rice Is Nice Records..

Over the last few months, Melbourne-based musician Sarah Mary Chadwick has been quietly sharing singles from her forthcoming new album Please Daddy (out this month - we'll get to that shortly), and in the process, has been steadily reminding the world why she's such a spectacular and impactful musician in a time where the complete opposite seemingly continues to flourish. There's a craft in gripping, heart-tugging musicianship and Chadwick has perfected it; last year's When Will Death Come, for example, being a devastatingly beautiful track that longs for release through aching vocals and soft-strumming melodies.

Now, as Please Daddy's arrival becomes closer, Sarah Mary Chadwick is showcasing her songwriting brilliance yet again, doing so with the release of her third album single - and her last, before the full album's arrival - with Let's Fight. In a way, it's more musically daring than what we've heard from the lead-up to the album thus far. It's a subtle ballad - seemingly Chadwick's home turf, in a musical sense - but one that ricochets with pacing melodies a little more up-tempo than what we've heard in the past; moving into a sound that sits somewhere in between the gripping indie of Chadwick's past and the softness of country-pop and alt-rock.

Lyrically, it's playful and witty but hints at something darker longing underneath - "Who doesn't like fighting until someone cries?," she asks - and the perfect representation of what's yet to come from a musician whose new album may be her best, despite the unarguable strengths of her past. There are moments that pull at you with their devastation - death and mental health are among the album's most central themes - alongside moments light-hearted and humourous. Let's Fight is somewhere in between. You don't know whether to laugh or cry, and that's what makes Sarah Mary Chadwick such a delight.
