Perfect for fans of PJ Harvey, Lana Del Rey and BANKS, the Sydney musician's latest single is a killer..
Towards the tail end of last year, we quickly fell in love with Sydney musician Lisa Caruso, who at the time, was sharing a delicate new number titled Shake Baby Shake. While putting her on the map as a musician to watch going into 2019, it was also the introduction of a rather new sound for the rising singer-songwriter, channelling 90s indie legends à la PJ Harvey and Cat Power as she takes this nostalgic, guitar-backed sound and moves it forward to 2019, injecting it with a modern spin to keep it relevant and feeling 'new'. "I'm pretty unafraid to share, and I don't mind confrontation if it means sorting shit out," she said when we introduced her last year, and it's something that also shines through with her songwriting; it's direct, attentive and captivating, regardless of what picture the lyrics are painting ("This one's bit of a slow burn. It's about having an invisible illness, so I wanted to translate the ongoing ride that it is," she said on Shake Baby Shake).
It was a teaser of something bigger to come, and while we still don't have too much info on what exactly that is - aside from it being her debut album, and it arrives later this year - we're proud to welcome another taste of the project today with Borrow My Body. Like Shake Baby Shake before it, Borrow My Body is a brooding number that takes notes from nostalgic classic-rock and subtle indie backings to create a tender moment that places her songwriting front-and-centre, finding the meeting place between Fleetwood Mac's class and Lana Del Rey's hazy nostalgia as twinkling melodies meet her touching, heart-pulling vocal. Borrow My Body feels a little more romantic and personal, but it's a really spectacular moment, and one you should dive into below ahead of its full release later this week:
