Emily Coulston is a name perhaps familiar in the US and Canada – the Edmonton-raised musician's debut EP, On Fire, boasts around 500 thousand plays on streaming platforms and she recently fronted a Canadian chocolate advert – but with her sights set on Australia thanks to a cross-continental move, she's undergoing the hard task of reintroducing herself once again. After relocating to Brisbane, inspired by our own bustling and internationally-expanding music scene, she's set out to capture our attention with Follow You, her first single for the year and her first since the move. It's a charming, bustling single thick with electronic instrumentation and pop songwriting, bringing together the worlds of Vera Blue and Maggie Rogers for a track that oozes with this slick, polishing feeling.
That said, the single's vocals still hold a touch of intimacy, with personal lyricism and Coulston's soft and almost-haunting vocal presence – even in its most climactic moments – uniting to give this vulnerable shading over the top. "The intimidatingly high hurdles of self-doubt and fear inevitably show up and cause you to question how much you’re willing to trust in yourself and the journey. This song is me feeling all that and saying, 'okay, I’m all in'," she says on the single, which kicks off a big year for the rising name ahead. "It's about surrender. It’s about trust. It’s about knowing what you want and surrendering to the tough road ahead of you to get there.
