DoolieDOOLIE has been a musician on the cusp of electronic brilliance for a while now. The Queensland-based musician has been a familiar face since 2017 and 2018, where she worked with musicians such as POOLCLVB and Paces in a collaborative role amongst early singles of her own. This year, however, she's really stepped up, refocusing on her own craft - she's only done one collaborative guest feature this year, on LO'99's Stay High - as she shares single after single, each reinventing the DOOLIE 'sound' and capturing our attention as one that consistently strives above the rest.
There was 2:20 first up, which saw her come together with Melbourne rapper Charlie Threads for a track that took her a touch out of electro-pop territory into something more R&B-intertwined, while tracks that have followed since - the China Roses-assisted Attention, the XMPLA-featuring No Game - have doubled down on her transitioning sounds, highlighting the intersection of R&B, pop and electronica as she places a distinct twist on familiar sounds to create something special - something that's quite hard to do, let alone only a few years into releasing music.
Her latest track, Slow Crawl, is a the cherry on top of a year full of highlights for DOOLIE. Premiering on Pilerats today ahead of its full release this Friday, the track is a dizzying flex of bold and empowering pop, really digging deep to muster up something special to showcase why she's not a name you should be forgetting about in 2020. It's a "very empowering song," she says, explaining that the track breaks down the feelings about lowering yourself. "I feel like a lot of us allow ourselves to be treated like trash to make another person more comfortable, so this is a song for all of us," she says.
Worked on alongside Cam Nacson, the track is a late highlight to DOOLIE's year, and if the momentum continues, the next decade is going to start off strong for the rising star too.
