Melbourne indie-punk heroes Camp Cope have had a phenomenal first year together, having earned a reputation for unbelievable live shows along with their intelligent, infectious and deeply human tunes, gifted to the world by way of their incredible self-titled debut LP.
We're feeling especially fortunate, then, to be premiering the video for Camp Cope's new single (and album opener) Done, which manages to capture the best of both worlds by having the song soundtrack footage of the band winning hearts at their recent sold-out album launch show in Brisbane, which went viral for a stunning display of solidarity shown by the women in attendance in response to apeish behaviour from a group of men determined to make themselves the focus of the evening, regardless of the impact on others. What could have ended in total disaster instead became a catalyst for protest as frontwoman Georgia Maq — and the room — made it clear such actions wouldn't be tolerated; it's a moment captured briefly in the video, and will undoubtedly find its way into the band's lore as a proud watershed in the life of the band and their fans.
"The 1:33 mark in the video captures me calling out the aggressive men who were 'just trying to enjoy' themselves, while compromising the safety, well-being and enjoyment of those around them," Maq recalls of the evening. "Rest assured, as long as we’re on stage and have a platform to have our voices heard, we will always call out this behaviour."
Aside from using their stages and songs such as the anthemic Jet Fuel Can't Melt Steel Beams helping to assert themselves as figureheads for change (after all, "the future is Camp Cope"), Camp Cope have achieved more in a paltry 12 months than most of us can muster over the entirety of our adult lives: they're regular fixtures on the airwaves, are beloved by triple j and community radio alike, have received exemplary reviews for their full-length from myriad outlets, shared stages with Modern Baseball, Waxahatchee, Jeff Rosenstock and Mere Women, and, as a key act on Poison City Records' respected roster, they'll be at this year's Poison City Weekender alongside local label-mates The Bennies and US fly-ins Cayetana and Pity Sex.
