Ahead of its February 10 release, we’re stoked to be premiering the forthcoming new music from Naarm/Melbourne based singer-songwriter, Bend The West, with new single Cause for Course and B-side Conjure Up streaming here ahead of their release.
The solo project of Oliver Iacono, Bend The West’s new music is a beautiful combination of alt-folk and lo-fi indie rock flavours, Cause for Course is a five and a half minute mini epic, packing french horns and string synths amidst it’s Pink Floyd and Father John Misty inspired vibes. Conjure Up chills things out on the flip side, lowering the tempo for a more laidback & relaxed take on alternative country and folk rock.
Of his two new songs, Iacono says “I recorded these tracks mostly on my old Samsung phone, in a ~partly~ successful attempt to make my recordings sound a bit more rough and organic. I tend to pile up the instruments in my songs regardless, but ‘Cause for Course’ was a conscious attempt to make a Phil Spector-style grand production, like a Death of a Ladies Man (Leonard Cohen) or a Pure Comedy (Father John Misty). Obviously those guys are also lyrical geniuses but I’m not at all trying to draw a comparison on that front! Coming later in 2023 is the odd single and another bigger release, recorded on cassette tapes in my continuing efforts to make my recordings sound worse.”
