Townsville-based pop-punk quintet Two-Eyed Wink have confessed that they have no intentions of relocating to Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne despite major-label courting, as they are concerned their well of material may run dry if taken away from their slightly less metropolitan surrounds.
The band, known for past triple j hits such as Escape This Town, Running Away To Home and Gotta Get Out (Of This Town), admit that a great wealth of their material is inspired by the daily disaffection that foments among pseudo-isolated youth as a result of having very little to do other than play music and have sex with each other.
“If you look at a song like Girl (This Town Isn’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us), you see a great deal of literalism coming through, which is a hallmark of the tracks on our second EP,” frontman Gil LaGrande told SPA Confidential.
“While the message is very much one about the pursuit of freedom from the oppressive chains of regional Australia, if we actually left the ‘Ville, I don’t know what we’d write about.”
Drummer Pedro T Ryan, however, seemed less convinced.
“I can’t wait to leave this fucking place,” he said on the phone. “Don’t tell the others, but I’ve already applied for jobs down south. I’m a drummer; it’s not like I’m not going to have a problem finding a new band.
“Anyway, there are only so many times you can get stoned and play some shitty dive bar in Railway Estate and call it a worthwhile career, you know?
