Give us the story behind your name?
My name is AMARNI - it’s actually my name by birth lol but in my culture, it has a very special meaning, so I feel like it was meant to be my stage name on its own just as AMARNI. It really represents who I am.
If your music was a flavour, what would it taste like?
Ooooo you know when those lollies came out with the Tajin Chamoy Sauce and everyone just loved them because they were such an unusual flavour? Dassss me. Like sweet but spicy - you never know what’s coming!
Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they impacted your own sound and style?
I appreciate music of so many different forms and styles so I could draw inspo from literally anything!
Sometimes it’s the writing, sometimes the beat, could be the concept. It just depends on what’s going on in my life at the time.
I love Drake - I love his melodies so I love to draw inspo from him. Then I’m all for the girls!!! Latto, Cardi B, Tink! There are so many, tbh.
What’s been the biggest moment in your career so far?
So many special moments. But my record Beyoncé opened up so many doors for me, so I’ll never forget that!
I toured Brazil because of it, I had one of the top 5 songs on Instagram in 2022, over 1.3 million reels to the track and over 1 million TikTok’s. It’s still going up 40-60k videos a day so it’s always a blessing - Alhamdulillah 🫶🏼
What's the most unusual or unexpected source of inspiration you've drawn from when writing a song?
Umm, honestly? My notes are crazy… So many random things written in there. But the most unusual would be like listening to people talk and writing down shit they say and turning it into a concept.
Can you share a hilarious or cringe-worthy moment from your early days as an artist?
Omg. So I performed at my dance concert when I was a kid, I was like 14 and the love of my life at the time came to watch me and I was so nervous that my voice cracked on stage while I was singing and sounded like a testi-pop.
I wanted to die in a hole at that very moment lmao.
What are the top three tracks or artists you’re vibing on rn?
Right now: Latto, Tory Lanez and Lil Durk.
What’s something that fans not might know about you?
I’m an extremely down-to-earth person. My stage presence is a character - like my alter ego but once you know me on a personal level I’m super soft and can be shy.
I won’t even give my real name out when I’m getting juice or something because I get that embarrassed of any attention😂 but on stage… I’m just in my element.
If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Tink - Gift and A Curse. God knows what that album got me through. So much pain but also healing and that’s why music is so special.
When I listen to that album it’s like she knows what I've been through and spoke exactly what I felt at that time, so shout out to Tink. She’s a queen 💐
What's in the works for you in 2023?
So much! I just got back from a life-changing trip in the US. I worked with so many artists I look up to, so many dope producers and writers and I just can’t wait to show the world all that sauce I have been cooking 🧑🏼🍳
