Machinedrum
"I’ve got two singles coming out on Ninja Tune soon. One with Rochelle Jordan again and another one with Rosie Lowe. I think they’re coming out early 2017." said Machinedrum when we caught up with him late last year for a chat about his then-just-released Human Energy record. "I don’t think I’m in anyway finished exploring the direction I took with Human Energy but it has allowed me to get a bit more experimental with things, which is more or less my background from my earlier releases. I really want to experiment with that approach more and try to dig deeper into that sound.” U Betta is the first taste of this experimentalism post-Human Energy for Machinedrum, with the US-based producer surprise-releasing the single on Soundcloud. Impressive in its contrasting of synthesised and organic sounds, U Betta is a synth-heavy return from Machinedrum, with firing rounds of sawing synth and rolling percussion combining on the single's expansive breakdowns, which sit between doses of airy, chilled-out acoustic guitar and vocal samples. It largely follows the sounds Machinedrum unexpectedly delved into on Human Energy, which signalled a newfound, electro-pop-leaning tone with aid from guest features including Dawn Richard and Rochelle Jordan.
