Back in November last year, Alt-J drummer Thom Green announced exciting plans for his first solo venture, a full-length album to come 'early 2016'. Although that time-frame has been and gone, the songwriter and producer has still followed through with his promise of new music, launching the project with the album's first official tease Vienna at the start of this month. Since then he's dropped a further two tracks, Palms and Phoenix, and this week he released the album's fourth taste, a chilled-out number titled Preach. Mixing indie-rock influences from his former work with Alt-J with subtle electronic shading, Preach is a brooding instrumental track that lingers anticlimactically for the track's four-minute duration. With the exception of some airy synth chords towards the track's closing, Preach doesn't really grow and build, instead, it just sort of drifts teasingly. That being said, Preach is intricate and complex enough that the addition of any sort of build-up or breakdown within the song isn't being missed, but instead makes us all the more excited to hear what other sounds he's pushing once his 21-track debut High Anxiety is released come August 19th.
