Jamie xx ProfileMusic-wise, the last peep we heard from Jamie xx was back in November, when he contributed a score, along with Four Tet, Koreless and John Talabot for the silent film Continuum. Each artist made a two-minute track for the project, a hypnotising set of visuals focused on color, movement and shape, inspired by deaf children lost in dance to music they couldn’t hear. Prior to this, Jamie impressed with the elastic-dance track All Under One Roof Raving.
Last night, however, we heard a new offering from the London producer, entitled Alba, when it premiered on Jon Hopkins’ BBC Radio 1 guest mix. Stylistically, the track lays closer to the film score than it does to One Roof Raving, and is thus perhaps indicative of a new direction the album Jamie's currently working on may head in. Delicate and cinematic, the track is almost like a piece of hazy, muted soft-jazz from the 80s, its lullaby-esque rhythym broken only by a super-muffled, heartbeat-like drum pounding.
