Purveyors of all things subversive and defiant, dark electronic spoken word Perth duo Doublethink Prism are back with their second single for the year, the intense and industrial tinged Marshall Tourists, featuring long time local alternative favourite Hayley Beth on guest vocals.
Producer Steven Alyian’s twisted, overblown beats take cues from everything from hip hop to techno, while spoken word artist Splodge “explores his identity as a black man growing up in a predominantly white community through the historical examination of the “marshall plan,” the influence of the US in post-world war countries, designed to kick start their economy, but also interrupt the growth of their culture”.
A thematically related vocal counterpoint to Splodge is Beth who “raps about her own Burmese cultural history, resulting in a fiery duet about the impact of capitalism on our race identities reflected in their own personal histories growing up in a world freshly imprinted with the lasting racial politics of WW2.”
Managing to be powerful, experimental, catchy and unique across it’s 4 minutes and 20 second runtime, Marshall Tourists comes ahead of the pair’s second album, with Malakut Golliwog due out later in the year on W.A. label Stock Records.
