Introducing Machine Age - an intriguing new artist blending analog and digital to perfection

Following the release of latest single Following, Brissy-based duo Machine Age have unveiled a wonderful stripped back take on the track ahead of some east coast tour dates next month. Frontman Adrian Mauro performs alongside percussionist Dylan Stewart in a pretty haunting performance, and perfectly encapsulates the Machine Age of blending analog and digital. We sent a few questions across to find out a little more.

Tell us about yourself?

I’m a music maker from Brisbane, I grew up in Cairns. I play a bunch of instruments and for a while there I mostly recorded and performed with other people until I mustered the courage to tell my own stories.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

When I started making music as Machine Age I didn’t want to adhere to any rules and just make music that I enjoyed writing and performing. I love experimental electronics, ambient sounds, bombastic drums, weird rock guitars and writing songs that help me deal with this thing called life.

Production/writing process:

I generally start songs on electric guitar, looping ideas and sounds or on Piano. Once I’ve got an idea I can usually hear the finished product in my head. The hard part is trying to realise it, drum sounds electronic or acoustic or both, synths, electric guitar, strings or any other sounds I can think of. The last part is to take the undercooked song on the road and bash it out live and hopefully take it to the next level.

Can you tell us about your new single, Fighting?

I had borrowed a bunch of synths and gear to finish recording songs for my soon to be released EP. But once I had it all plugged in I started making sounds and got excited and wrote “fighting” from scratch in a day or so. I left it in an un-finished sate for a little while until my drummer Dylan and I tested it out around the country supporting Holy Holy on their Paint Tour last year.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

I’m super excited that we’re releasing our debut EP in March. I’m really proud of it and can’t wait to show people the other colours in our palette. I also can’t wait to share our next single which I collaborated on with a well know Perth electronic production duo (sorry can’t say yet).
