Introducing Glass Wave and the intense new video for their latest single, Melancholy

Glass Wave are a punk/grunge/rock four-piece straight outta Perth, who are coming up to their first year of existence this very weekend. Not only that, they're launching the rad video clip for latest single, Melancholy, all about which you can learn below as we sent them a few questions to find out a little more. 

Tell us about about yourselves?

Four mates from Perth, Western Australia, with a love for writing tunes, playing loose shows and sinking tins!

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Alternative rock/grunge. For fans of Violent Soho, Basement, Title Fight and DMA’s. Each of us have different influences, from hardcore to surf to classic rock. I think it’s a cool crossroads between genres and you can hear distinct bits of each of us in our music.

Production/writing process:

Ideas usually start with a guitar riff or chord progression that we’ll bounce off each other until we’ve got a rough structure for a demo. Most of the time we’ll rock up to jam, and Asher will waltz in a few hours later, dart in one hand and beer in the other. Fortunately for us he’s an incredibly talented kid, and after a couple runs through he’ll be belting out a rad melody that absolutely nails it. With time we’ve grown into writing songs as a complete band, and I think Melancholy is a great representation of us as a whole. The best songs are written in less than five minutes, when everything just seems to fall into place perfectly, and this is one of them.

Can you tell us about your new single, Melancholy?

It's our first release since our debut EP Discomposure back in December. It’s got a different vibe to the EP - it’s more melodic and has cleaner, ambient guitars. I think it tells more of a story and it’s got a bit of a darker theme. The progression is one that we’re keen to develop with our future releases, but we’re excited to get back to the studio and unleash our heavier side too! Recording Melancholy was a completely different approach, we planned to release it as a single from day one. The music video was always in the back of our heads, so we spent a little more time in the studio working on the details and getting it perfect. It was a lot of fun recording the different layers to build the atmosphere with guitar tones and ambient reverb. I think it’s a more polished product overall.

Filming a music video was an interesting experience! We worked with director Jakob B. Hardy and a production crew of about 15 people, plus actors and extras. Filming was done over two days at Nathan’s house, plus an underwater shoot. Sasha the actress did a great job, persevering through hours of underwater shooting past midnight, in temperatures below 8 degrees! For some reason we decided to play a show the night before the shoot, and then continue to party until 5:30am. The film crew were knocking on the door at 6:15am… safe to say it was definitely the hardest day in our existence.

Any shows coming up?

The Melancholy single launch! Saturday 19th August at Jack Rabbit Slim’s. It’s our biggest headline show to date and we’re bloody stoked to be doing it with our friends in Cellophane, Idle Eyes and Dead Sea. Shit’s gonna get wild, come mosh and drink beers.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

A heap of rad shows, some over east dates, and another release that we’re working on with some good friends of ours. The WA regional tour will be a heap of fun! Touring is always a crazy time and there’s some awesome local supports too. Oh, and we’re celebrating our first birthday as a band! It’s the weekend of the Melancholy single Launch.
