I (Joshua Daydream) met with SURES on a lovely friday evening at the Excelsior Hotel before they head out on their huge co-headlining tour with Go Violets - there we shared $5 Pints and a chat about what’s been going on in their world.

How would you describe Sures to someone who has never heard you before?

J: A mix between old One Direction and new One Direction, back with their roots.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

B: (Laughs) with reverb!

S: Cause nobodies not heard One Direction before!!

J: Or what about a mix between baroque music and Ke$ha and if you meet all the way in the middle, because it’s such a far stretch, you get Sures.

(laughs) Oh man, I’m going to be typing this out for ages!

S: You’ll have to fast forward through so much shit... I’m going to be mauve...

Yeah I’ll just have to put in brackets (shit talking) every time we go off on a tangent.

(SHIT TALKING)

What’s the deal with the new film clip?

M: We got together in a warehouse called Sun, no Electric Sun, no just Sun Studios and then a dude called Will Colvin, he did this crazy video called...

M: It’s just him as a crazy person, and we thought that it was such a good video that we got him to do ours.

Yeah it looks really great, what was the inspiration behind the clip?

J: We’ll be honest, it wasn’t really our idea as much as Colvin, who came up with everything, and we just followed his direction. We felt like we were in pretty safe hands I think, we just went with it, every idea that he threw at us we were just like “sweet, let’s fucking do it”.

M: We got to the meeting and he was like “alright guys I gave you the pitch, but I’m thinking about getting heaps of fish...” and we were just like "okay, FISH IT IS"!!

J: So he had a bunch of ideas and we shot them all...

Sounds cool, And what’s the go with Sures and Go Violets?

S: They’re rad and we’re touring with them, we’re going on a co-headlining tour with them in September which should be rad!

J: ...we’re heading to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Wollongong and Adelaide as a part of the tour and I guess we’ll headline some and Go Violets will headline the others.

You’ve been signed to Ivy League for a while now, how has making music been differed from the days of doing it out of your own garage / bedroom?

J: It’s not really different, they had quite a heavy involvement early on even before we were signed as management - so things haven’t really changed. They’ve always been really close with us and [we're] really tight so it’s all good!

Getting the answers tonight, So where does your inspiration come from?

M: Being an angsty post teen... in the suburbs...

(laughs)

J: heaps of rap music (J’s enthusiasm is literally oozing out of every word) I listen to Drake, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar and then the old stuff, gotta respect your elders, Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z... (collective laughter). Why did I even say Jay-Z? I fucking hate Jay-Z (laughs). Wipe that from the record, I do not like Jay-Z.

Talks go down about a live facetime interview with myself and each member of the band to wrap up the tour. Hey editor, let’s make this happen yeah?

Alright back to business... what’s your songwriting process like?

J: I just write the songs on a laptop (Garageband) just demo quality, then we want to find out what’s the best direction to take it. It’s hard to say what the songwriting process is because we’re still trying to figure that out. Trying to figure out the best way to do things.

Is it a collaborative process?

J: At the moment I write the bulk of it, and Matt writes some songs as well

S: It’s separate to the live shows, not heaps separate but, he [Jonas] writes the songs and that’s the song writing, but the live shows, we all kind of jam it out...

B: and do our own thing...

J: The song does come along way from when it’s written to recorded to played live.

M: With the new EP, we had the songs for a while and jammed them out and figured out where to take them in a live context. Then when we recorded them they changed again.

You’ve been receiving rave reviews from numerous blogs across cyber space, Do you ever google yourselves and read your record reviews?

S: All the time!

J: SIMON!! (all laugh)

B: Simon tells us what’s up.

S: I’m addicted to social media so yeah... YEAH... Just fuckin YEAH!

M: Beth keeps a track of all the #hashtags on Tumblr

B: See what all the teen gals are saying about us, you know...

Do Sures actually have their own Tumblr?

B: We don’t!! We thought about it but... it’s just blogging and stuff..

M: micro blogging... sorta..

S: Is that how you found Beth?

B: Hey! Let’s not talk about that!

Really? Is that how you two met [Matt and Beth] via Tumblr?

M: It’s how Beth got involved in the band.

B: Yeah I guess so. Mutual friendships and Tumblr... Matt messaged me one day, “I need a bass player / you’re a bass player / I don’t know you at all, but you’re a bass player / come play with us”

S: He does that quite often with those Tumblr babes

M: We had a show in a weeks time and our current bass player was going to India and our criteria was we needed a bass player and we wanted it to be a chick. I knew from around that she played bass for another band and I saw her on Tumblr so I just hit her up...

B: Hit her up...

S: And that’s how Beth became.... Beth

A long conversation ensues regarding Simon’s obsession with googling himself, his poster wall filled with Sures posters and his trophy room filled with google articles about himself, all of which he denies.

Other than Sures, how do each of you pass your time? Simon we already know how you pass your time, googling yourself 9-5 so how about the rest of the band?

B: Well funny you should, we all work in a call centre so if any of you receive annoying calls around dinner time it’s probably us.

And maybe they should answer them. People could have their own chats with the band.

B: Yeah just have a chat with us...

M: ... and give us money...

S: and put shit on google for those of us who don’t work at the call centre...

(laughing)

What’s on the horizon for Sures?

All: We’re really just focusing on the tour, that’s what’s up. We don’t know whats after that really.

B: I guess write songs...

J: Yeah I guess so, maybe an album

B: Yeah an album next year..

J: We don’t know a lot of stuff until it’s on the internet already,

B: I find out everything from Simon..

S: Guys I googled us and we have an album coming out (laughs)
