Netflix's recent 8-part series Stranger Things was a sci-fi/horror/thriller nerds absolute wet dream. For someone who cites Steven Spielberg as his favourite all-time directors, and Stephen King as one of his favourite horror writers, it was the perfect amalgamation of the two maestros for a show that felt warmly familiar without just being a boring re-hash. It's difficult to toe the line between homage and original ideas (just ask JJ Abrams, who tried real hard with Super 8, but didn't quite hit the mark), but Stranger Things managed to basically pick and choose ideas from a plethora of classic 70s and 80s films and turn it into a new show that still feels fresh and exciting.
