Have You Heard: Dro Carey

30 July 2014 | 1:22 pm | Staff Writer

If Dro Carey could only bring one album into space with him, he'd go back to a teenage fave; nostalgia's got a tight grip.

How did you get your start?
The first record I put out was an EP with The Trilogy Tapes. It was very early on in terms of how much time I’d spent creating electronic music and it has taken a while since then to sort of understand what I wanted to do with it all. However, I still consider that to be the start, even if I wasn’t sure what the plan was at the time, as it’s what led to further releases and also to working with Astral People.

Sum up your musical sound in four words?
Heavy, restless, amorphous, playful.

If you could support any band in the world – past or present – who would it be?
I think it would have been cool to DJ before a show by Can.

You’re being sent into space, no iPod, you can bring one album – what would it be?
Liquid Swords by GZA. Can’t ignore the teenaged iTunes play counts on that one so, based on that, I’d say it’s the best contender.

Greatest rock’n’roll moment of your career to date?
A big highlight for me remains playing a show as part of the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival in 2012, on a bill with Lukid and Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk. My manager and I flew to Norway just for the one set and were only there for a couple of days.

Why should people come and see your set?
I try to make my DJ sets special and always aim to include a large proportion of my own stuff, including very recent, unreleased tracks. Sometimes I will make informal remixes and edits just for shows, just to build up a set that fits the context and offers something special. So I hope it delivers on two levels: it gets you moving and offers something you haven’t heard before.

When and where for your next gig? The next Dro Carey show will be at Ferdydurke on 3 Aug. It will be the first Dro set in some time!
