WAAXMember answering/role: Tom (drums)
How long have you been together? We’ve been kicking around just over a year now.
How did you all meet? Lige and Marie met at uni and formed a primitive version of the band. They rehearsed at a rehearsal studio I was running and were pretty much my only customers, they lost their drummer and I thought ‘fuck it, I’ll play’. Then we found Arie and Ewan somewhere along the way, probably while drunk.
You’re on tour in the van – which band or artist is going to keep the most people happy if we throw them on the stereo? If you want us to be REALLY entertained bloody put on some Reggie Watts and we’ll be laughing for days, other than that we like to listen to stuff we haven’t heard before together, especially if it’s local.
Would you rather be a busted broke-but-revered Hank Williams figure or some kind of Metallica monster? I’ll probably end up broke and busted regardless because I’m shit with money and hand eye coordination but fuck man I dunno, I love Hank and (early) Metallica, what if Hank Williams joined Metallica? That’s the band I wanna be in, a revered, broke monster.
Which Brisbane bands before you have been an inspiration (musically or otherwise)? Obligatory DZ Deathrays and Violent Soho insertion, legit though they are fucking fantastic. I grew up on Powderfinger and The Saints so Brisbane has always been a massive influence on me and also the other guys musically.
What part do you think Brisbane plays in the music you make? A hauuugggge part, Brisbane is small enough that everyone knows everyone and it makes for a cool environment in the scene, Brisbane is fucking killing it at the moment and being around so many musicians that are doing well pushes you harder and inspires you to come up with better shit.
What’s in the pipeline for the band in the short term? Recording soon, new jams, then bulk shows. You’ll hear from us soon.
WAAX play The Foundry (with The Sinking Teeth and Jouk Mistrow) on Saturday 7 March.
