Perth rapper Coin Banks is releasing his new EP, Outside Looking In, tomorrow, but ahead of its release you can have a cheeky listen to the fresh goods in full.
Proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today, Outside Looking In is an exceptionally polished — and just plain exceptional — piece of work, Banks deftly juggling multiple influences to have crafted an aurally colorful and textually inspired collection of songs sure to make a convert out of even the most trenchant hip hop sceptics.
From the choral-drenched glory of opening gambit Forgive Us, featuring the inclusion of the wonderful Waapa Gospel Choir, to the E-piano-touched beats of Problems (ft Atom & Ezra James), the retro-tinged old-school vibes of BreakBanks, the casual, ultra-smooth cool of EP closer Handlebars (ft Atom) and everything in-between, Coin Banks has truly asserted himself as one of the most inventive yet accessible talents in the country's diverse and dynamic hip hop scene.
It's little surprise that he's seen a significant uptick in his airplay from the likes of triple j (and Unearthed), FBi, SYN FM, 4ZZZ, RTR FM and more, buoyed by a raft of accolades from all corners of the industry and a series of increasingly high-profile live performances, including supporting international heavyweights like Cypress Hill, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Action Bronson and local mainstay Illy over the past few years.
