Cinepile: Nix Nic Nooley - A New Breed Of Surf Movie

The release of Toby Cregans’ self-written and directed surf film Nix Nic Nooley has opened the door to a new style of surf movie. The feature length film hosts an all-star surf cast, which isn't unusual of course, but it is the year 2879, the ocean has dried up due to pollution, and the only way to surf is to travel back in time. The film follows the only two people still interested in surfing, played by Creed McTaggart and Duncan McNicol. Throughout the movie they are joined by an array of characters, outrageous surfing, and acting so bad it's good. Nix Nic Nooley steps away from your normal surf movie, and moves more into indie film territory, with a heavy surfing influence. I have issues sitting through movies without getting bored, but with Nix Nic Nooley, I was hooked and would definitely recommend seeing it! In my opinion these Byron bay boys have used bizarre humor and surf culture to address environmental issues, as well as give an insight into the life of a couple of mischievous Aussie boys, and breathes a heap of fresh air into the surf film genre.
