BIGSOUND 2019 Speaker Focus: Bekah Zietz Flynn

30 August 2019 | 7:46 am | Artist Submission

What you need to know about your BIGSOUND speakers.

Position/Title: Publicity, International Promotions And A&R at Sub Pop Records

How did you first become involved in the music industry and how did you end up where you are today? I moved to Seattle for an internship at Sub Pop which turned into a part-time job. While working part-time at Sub Pop, I also worked at a local venue, record store, and as an assistant at ADA. I then went to work at Suicide Squeeze, until returning to Sub Pop.

What's been the biggest change in the music industry you've seen over the past 12 months? Social media is playing a more vital role in artists' careers. The ability to connect directly with fans in a “real” and “authentic” way is more important than it’s ever been, but the flip side of that is everyone's watching and is a critic.

What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? If I only had a crystal ball.

What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Don't be afraid to ask questions and reach out to people in the industry that are doing things that interest you.

What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference and what are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel? Not entirely sure yet, but am very excited to participate.
