What you need to know about your BIGSOUND artists.
Answered by: Reija Thomas
Give us a short description of your music: Reija Lee has proven her ability to transcend genres with her solo project, blending ‘80s synth-pop with her renowned topline melodies, and taking inspiration from vintage rock when it comes to the stage.
Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND? Micra, Approachable Members Of Your Local Community, yergurl.
Why should people come and see you among the many amazing bands at BIGSOUND? I usually front the stage for bass music DJs like ShockOne, but I also make girly retro synth-pop music. Wouldn't you want to see how that pans out?! With a full live band and a set that ranges from my solo tracks to my dance features, it's definitely different.
What music trends do you think are dominating right now, and do you have any predictions for the coming year? I think we will see the full flourishing of the Australian pop renaissance. Grunge-rock is also back in a big way, so I think we'll start to see a marriage of the two, which I am pretty darn excited about.
In your career to date, what have been the key watershed moments? Having one of my tracks used for a Victoria’s Secret commercial in the US and Canada, and seeing it shoot to number one on iTunes was definitely a hallmark moment. Also supporting The Prodigy with ShockOne last year to a 15,000 capacity venue was pretty special!

What industry lessons would you like to take away from the BIGSOUND conference? Networking! Because I am shy and awkward and I hate promoting myself, ha ha.
What do you identify as the most pressing issue impacting the Australian music industry at present? The monopolisation of national radio. Triple J can't possibly play everything. And lots of great artists miss out. It seems like without breaking into triple j rotation, you can't get anywhere. We need more national radio stations that are genre-specific, and/or a bigger focus on streaming and digital radio.
What is the best bit of advice you've been given to prepare for your time at BIGSOUND? You know, I don't think anyone’s given me any advice for BIGSOUND yet! It's always welcome... ha ha.
When and where is your BIGSOUND showcase? 3 Sep, The Wickham, 9.40pm; 5 Sep, Woolly Mammoth Mane Stage, 10pm.
