BIGSOUND 2019 Artist Focus: Penelope Two-Five

27 August 2019 | 8:01 am | Artist Submission

What you need to know about your BIGSOUND artists.

Answered by: Shannon Mavrik

Give us a short description of your music: Penelope Two-Five was born in the basement of a Brisbane warehouse. Part-heartfelt lyricists, part-percussion partisans, the pair explore realms of revivalist breaks and house while maintaining their dusty analogue orientation.

Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND? Dream Coast, First Beige, Luboku, Sunbeam Sound Machine, These New South Whales.

Why should people come and see you among the many amazing bands at BIGSOUND? We offer something a little different. We vary among many different house and techno genres while keeping that live element. Live we pride ourselves on keeping the crowd energised and creating one, big, grooving dancefloor.

What music trends do you think are dominating right now, and do you have any predictions for the coming year? For dance genres, rave, breaks and electro are super hot at the moment. While acid house has always been around, I think it will have another resurgence soon.

In your career to date, what have been the key watershed moments? Our performance at the last Arcadia festival was extremely special. We also just had our first interstate gigs in Melbourne which was also awesome.

What industry lessons would you like to take away from the BIGSOUND conference? I'm hoping BIGSOUND can add that next level of professionalism to all aspects of our music – whether it be releases, shows, APRA or anything in between.

What do you identify as the most pressing issue impacting the Australian music industry at present? Not enough radio stations that promote independent music.

What is the best bit of advice you've been given to prepare for your time at BIGSOUND? Make the most of it. It's a huge opportunity to showcase your sound and many people have not had the chance to play there. Milk it as much as possible.

When and where is your BIGSOUND showcase? 3 Sep, Heya Bar, 11.40pm; 5 Sep, Woolly Mammoth Mane Stage, 9.10pm.
