BIGSOUND 2019 Artist Focus: Aphir

What you need to know about your BIGSOUND artists.

Answered by: Becki Whitton

Give us a short description of your music: An ongoing mission to empty my feelings into the void via distorted choral arrangements.

Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND? A bunch of friends who I've done mixing and mastering work for are playing and I'm really excited to see them live: Huntly, Wolfjay, LÂLKA, Japanese Wallpaper, Hemm and yergurl to name a few.

Why should people come and see you among the many amazing bands at BIGSOUND? People should come and see my show if they want to feel a lot of feelings and then feel clean afterwards. There will be beautiful visuals made by Carla Zimbler and guest vocals from my dear friend Karla Gilbard (KAIAR).

What music trends do you think are dominating right now, and do you have any predictions for the coming year? I'm hoping for an Old Town Road remix featuring members of the original Saddle Club cast.

In your career to date, what have been the key watershed moments? The turning points I'm most interested in are internal ones. Earlier this year I scrapped an album I'd been working on for two years. I've now made a better one. Going through that process made me feel like I've set my timeline right.

What industry lessons would you like to take away from the BIGSOUND conference? In my experience so far the music industry lesson you need to learn most is always learning which music industry lesson it is you need to learn.

What do you identify as the most pressing issue impacting the Australian music industry at present? I would like to see more women and non-binary people being upheld and treated well in a range of industry roles. I would love for the Australian music scene to be a place where a more diverse range of artists can feel safe and confident sharing their stories.

What is the best bit of advice you've been given to prepare for your time at BIGSOUND? My friend Emma played at BIGSOUND last year and she told me I should wear a sequinned onesie the whole time. I don't think I really want to but I can see how it's good advice.

When and where is your BIGSOUND showcase? 3 Sep, The Wickham, 8pm; 4 Sep, Woolly Mammoth Mane Stage, 8.20pm.
