Kisschasy’s Darren Cordeux Finds His Way Home On ‘The Terrors Of Comfort’

BIGSOUND 2017 Speaker Focus: Sadie Dupuis

Organisation: Speedy Ortiz, Sad13 and Wax Nine - musician and songwriter, producer and label head

How did you first become involved in the music business and how did you end up where you are today? I started writing songs as a kid, never anticipating performing would become my day gig. Having dabbled in many corners of the music industry, I'm thankful playing music is the one that's stuck.

What's been the biggest change in the music business you've seen over the past 12 months? A greater emphasis on inclusivity, particularly in editorial coverage. Dedication to listening to the concerns of people who have been underrepresented in the industry. Strides towards accountability from those who've misused their power.

What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? New artists deal with utterly poor compensation and are saddled with infinite unpaid labour. This bar to entry allows only the economically privileged to have their music heard, thus reinforcing a harmful, exclusionary status quo.

What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Recognise your privileges, and use them to boost the voices and stature of others who aren't as lucky. Work only with those whose ethics you can stand behind. Always strive to be good.

What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference and what are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your interview? How can touring musicians use their platform for social activism and fundraising? How can those employed in tangential areas of the music industry do the same? This, followed by a Q&A with Pitchfork's Jillian Mapes.

What do you personally hope to take away from your time at BIGSOUND? Looking forward to it all, but especially the No More Manels!!! workshop, the Women In Music party, and Ric Leichtung from AdHoc's lecture.

Which acts are you most looking forward to checking out at BIGSOUND? Kardajala Kirridarra, Boat Show, Thandi Phoenix, SlA¸Slotface, Body Type.

When and where is your interview? 6 Sep, The Judith Wright Centre, 10am. And then Sad13 will perform 8 Sep, Woolly Mammoth.
