Artists to Watch in 2018: Clypso

Sydney based producer CLYPSO infuses jungle beats with Afropunk influences to create songs that will have you moving in no time.

CLYPSO is a Sydney-based producer whose sound is a collage of jungle beats, grimey basslines, atari-esque synths and afropunk infused electronica. Many have tried to fuse Afropunk's rhythms with electronic music, but CLYPSO's approach has been by far one of the most successful.

Take her single 'YOLO', which weaves the two inextricably together. It features music you can imagine tribes in Burma and South Africa dancing to, melded to a vibrant assortment of drums and synths. The result is a bouncing, captivating mix of impulses, with strange percussive effects, hand claps and popping.

Her latest track, ‘Save Me’ is first and foremost a mood piece, darker than 'YOLO'. It conjures wide open atmospheres, aching with space. It revolves around airy, reverb-y chords, with flute effects running through and appearing in bursts. The prevailing feeling is awe and wonder, suggesting the overwhelming landscape of a forest or jungle. Crackling fires come to mind, bright and hot, an image reinforced by the single’s cover art which features CLYPSO’s top half illumined in the darkness by a soft and warm light.

Both tracks CLYPSO has released so far have been glimpses into her versatility as a producer and musician, and it's not just us that seems to have noticed. She's been in the studio with a multitude of successful producers, from RIBONGIA to  PNAU, and even worked with the Future Classic crew, so it seems the word of CLYPSO is quickly spreading. She also opened LISTEN OUT in Sydney, and has been playing a few killer shows across NSW. To get the full idea of what she can really do, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
