We chat with Kooyeh's Louie Michael before the band bring down the house at The Basement for World Music Wednesdays tonight.

Artist/Band: Kooyeh

Name: Louie Michael

What the best venue – anywhere in the world – you've played?: The Basement was the first venue outside of my home town that I had performed. To be on that stage was amazing. You can always feel the presence of the musicians who have been there.

Is there one country you particularly love performing in?: I haven't played outside of Australia yet... so Australia would be my only love. I think Brazil would be cool.

What part of the world has had the most influence on you, musically?: For me the rhythms that come from Africa and Colombia have always had a spot in my soul. In saying that I draw inspiration from a lot of western music to including urban hip hop.

Where have you experienced music really impacting and influencing a culture?: TrisElies Nightclub in Katoomba. It was the begininning.

When it comes to your band – is more always better?: Depends on how epic the show needs to be... but 9 people is enough to juggle right now!

What's one instrument you wish you could master?: I would love to master the piano. Though as a drummer maybe I should stick to that, pun intended.

Do you have any pre-gig rituals?: Is this a trick question? We usually hug each other. It aligns our auras as one & makes us happy.

What's your favourite food dish?: I have been making torn ox cheek stuffed in field mushrooms topped with feta and salsa verde with mash mmmmmmmmmm.

Can you recommend us a drink at the bar?: The Bob Marley drink!!!! It's Multicoloured! Creme de Menthe, green, liqueur, banana. rum, overproof/151 proof, grenadine.
