To Eternity

“We haven’t done one of these big tours for a few years now, I’m loving it. I really enjoy that relationship with people and it’s easier in these smaller places."

"I had a look through and there was some funny stuff in there. I found it really interesting that there weren't any real rude ones, at least I don't think that's been the case. I don't think Instagram allows that anyway.” Peter Hume, bass and keys virtuoso of brotherly Melbourne-via-New Zealand soft-rockers Evermore, is talking about the concept behind the trio's new music video for Hey My Love, the latest single from their fourth album, Follow The Sun, released in October. Earlier this year the band hit their fanbase up to share their Instagram photos to feature in the clip, created by film-savvy Peter Hume, and the response so far has been overwhelming with two versions already released and more to come, including a special mumsy one for Mother's Day.

“I'm really stoked,” Hume tells. “We've had thousands of people's really beautiful photos of things they love, and it's got this nostalgic and genuine feel about all these real moments. Videos can really be about making the bands look cool, and I think people's reactions to this have been really good because it's about people that's not us! I like that.”

The 27-year-old is making the most of his four-day respite while he can, sleeping in between shows that have seen him leave in the wee hours of the morning, drive all night for early morning promo stints, only to hit the road again to play a show that night. Hume is in the throes of the band's Hero national tour with singer Jon but sans Dann, who normally plays drums on the albums and tours. With their home-built Stables recording studio on Melbourne's outskirts doing big business producing the latest albums from indie dynamos Lisa Mitchell, Alpine and Snakadaktal with Dann at the helm, it's little wonder the youngest of the three brothers chose not to embark on the 29-date extravaganza.

“At first it was a really big thing, I was like 'oh man, how's this gonna work?' Because we've only ever played with Dann, it felt very daunting,” Hume explains. “I think he wasn't loving playing drums. He's got so many skills, he's a great producer and a really great performer. Understandably, he wasn't excited about touring and so we're really happy for him to do what he loves to do.

“We haven't done one of these big tours for a few years now, I'm loving it. I really enjoy that relationship with people and it's easier in these smaller places. People kind of joke about it in my band actually, that I'll hang around for hours. I think there was one time in Brisbane, and I was there, like, for an hour after it finished. I ended up talking to some homeless guys.”

Arriving at a commercial peak following 2009's Truth Of The World, the Evermore boys were hand-picked as tour supports for Pink, Matchbox 20 and Maroon 5, performing often nightly for weeks at sizeable sold-out arenas across the country. It was then they decided it was time for a proper break, but true to their never-failing workmanlike attitude, it ended up being a working holiday, recording in Marrakech, Paris, Jerusalem, Madrid and Buenos Aires. “I think travelling helped us define what we wanted to do, and what Evermore was best at and what excited us most. I think that's very much what this record feels like to me,” he reasons. “It feels very comfortable in who we are.

“We can take a long time recording. On Truth Of The World we spent a year in the studio. And it was a lot of work, particularly when you can keep throwing around ideas and there's no one on the clock, so yeah, it can be a double-edged sword but we've figured that out. You just have to put limitations on yourself. We've been through so much together over the last, what, 15 years nearly in music. You spend so much time together that you're more than just siblings.”
