German grime/hip-hop master DJ Doshy made an admirable effort to bridge the language barrier for this week’s DJ Booth.
DJ name: DOSHY
Based in: Berlin, Germany and Guangzhou, China.
What you play... Grime, and lots of 808ish crunky hip-hop stuff, a bit of newer Jungle... potentially music with lots of sub.
What residencies do you have and crews do you belong to? I'm German, and I run a label called Robox Neotech.
A few career highlights: My tour of Asia in 2011, with six countries and ten shows; Qbert & D-styles using my DCU tune for their recent live shows in 2012/2013 (see it here at Kaikoo Popwave Festival Japan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ftyb2v3XJHc). Also, my tunes getting played by GaslampKiller, Starkey, D-styles, Salva, and Eprom, to name a few.
First set, and what was most memorable for you? Around when I was 13 with tapes, CDs, and records on a mixer without EQ and without any knowledge of any beatmatching and stuff... at some kinda church afterparty thing for the kids... was fun.
All time favourite 12”? Wow, that's hard... I have to name two LPs. Dopplereffect – Gesamtkunstwerk, and Qbert - Wavetwister.
What DJs and producers have influenced your own style and interests the most and how? Dopplereffect, Aux808, D-Styles, Qbert's Wavetwister, Mixmaster Mike, Subhead, and Jamie Vex'd aka Kuedo. I am heavly influenced by synthesers, and particularly the FX and weird soundtextures you can find in Detroit electroclash music and scfi movies. When Qbert came up with the Wavetwisters movie, I got really inspired by chopped up vocals and chopped samples sounds… my music became more hiphopish, and the sounds took on a more comic character. I love music that sounds like robots. Generally, I like to let the machines speak. I love programming way more then playing things live.
Weirdest thing you've seen in a nightclub? One hundred Chinese people in a club, not dancing - just standing, staring at the decks and me, and then afterwards, lots of them came up and told me I played an amazing set.
How healthy do you see your hometown's scene? Some recommendations of talents to look out for? Berlin is full of producers. Lakritze form berlin... got some big talent, definetly someone to watch out.
Been touring lately? Stories to tell of you recent travels? Yeah, I've been playing bunch of shows and festivals over the last summer in Europe and China, but since September I kept It a bit slow and writing a lot of music.
Have you ever been in Perth? If so, what can you remember of it? It's my first time in Australia, and I'm super excited.
Artists you've collaborated with: Stagga and Conrank – and there will come more.
What are your currently working on? To be signed to Civil Music for a fourth EP, and a debut LP. I have lots of things in the pipeline. Watch out!
What should people expect from you when you tour here? I like late night sets, so I will build my set up slowly before I get straight into it.... I love my sets to be banging with quick mixes, and there will be rewinds... hehe.
