Step into the booth with DJ DYP.

Daytime (real) name: Iain Gately

From: Perth

How did you get your DJ name? It's inspired by a mix a mate and I downloaded when we started out DJing called the Panty Dropping Bass Mix – I'll let you guys figure out the rest.

What you play... A whole mixed bag of stuff, mostly House, Garage and UK Funky. I try and get as many of my own productions in there as I can manage as well.

What residencies do you have and crews do you belong to? I'm not a huge fan of the whole concept of 'crews,' as far as I'm concerned we're all part of the Perth Crew/Family. Oh, also the Morgan Street Soundsystem.

Career highlight: I think that playing the Boiler Room has to be the highlight for me, that was such an awesome experience, so much love in the room and so many of Perth's most talented producers and acts doing us proud.

First set, and what was most memorable for you? Playing at a DJ competition in my first year of uni, I was the only DJ mixing vinyl and the decks were in such bad condition, plus I hadn't yet learned that you should bring your own needles to gigs, so needless to say it s almost impossible to mix as the needles were skipping all over the place. I managed to fit a lot of trainwrecks into that ten minute set…

All time favourite 12”? Probably my copy of New Jack Swing by James Fox, out on Well Rounded Housing Project.

Fave DJs and why? International-wise it's hard to go past Jackmaster. Dude's got crazy selections and amazing skills. Local wise I'd have to say Allstate, his mixing is pretty much flawless and always on point.

Fave producers and why? Kryptic Minds, their production is just immense, so well structured and engineered. The Road Less Travelled remains one of my favourite tunes of all time.

Best set by a Perth DJ and why? It's pretty hard to single out a specific set, because everyone usually always brings their A-game, but I think it's fair to say that the recent Boiler Room shows the other weekend were some of the best performances I've seen in terms of everyone stepping up to the plate and absolutely killing it.

Complete these sentences:

I dance like a… spider monkey.

I play records like a… man posessed.

In 2020 music will be… pretty fucked.

Perth club/dance scene need more or less of? Less phones on the dancefloor !!!!! (although I'm guilty of this myself sometimes).

Weirdest thing you've seen in a nightclub? At an after party for a conference last year I was confronted by a club full of 40-something archaeologists, it was like watching a room full of my dad trying to dance.

Best all time gig? Probably the warehouse party that Ben UFO played at last year, it was just amazing; a totally packed room with everyone going mental, proper ravey vibes.

Worst trainwreck? Every trainwreck feels like the worst one you've had, although I've had a couple that have occurred right at the start of a set, trying to pull off a tricky mix to get everyone's attention and failing, that have been pretty cringe-worthy.

Funniest record you've ever played out? When a mate and I were first starting out, we opened a set with Castles in the Sky once just to see the look on the promoter's face.

Worst bootleg ever? That trap remix of 'Imagine' by John Lennon *shudder*.

Spend more on music than you earn? Actually I finally got a proper 'adult' job the other year so I'm starting to break even again after a lifetime of music induced debt haha.

In real life you: Wander around the Pilbara looking for stone artefacts.
