Birthday Booty

1 November 2012 | 2:52 pm | Staff Writer

Fly By Night with Sarah Bellon (Operations Manager).

What's happened at The Fly By Night since your last birthday? There have been so many amazing shows in the past year including Nouvelle Vague, The Beards, Lanie Lane, Adam Cohen, Xavier Rudd, Passenger, Mark Gardener, Toni Childs, Tim Rogers, Clairy Brown & The Bangin' Rackettes, Gomez, Harry Manx… and The Beautiful Girls final shows in WA ever!

What do you put the success of The Fly By Night down to? Great staff and contractors working together with a passion for presenting world class live music within a unique and amazing venue.

Has any one ever worn their birthday suit there? The Club's Venue Coordinator has a bad habit of getting naked and posing for photos with props and sets left within the venue… Including Jimmy Webb's grand piano, fashion cat walks, beer kegs – any excuse will do!

What's the weirdest thing in the last year you've found when the lights have come on? A claw foot bath, a 1962 vintage Fender Mustang guitar and a ridiculously giant pair of jeans…

Who takes the cake for the best/craziest show the last year? French-Aussie, Paris-based Nadéah (from Nouvelle Vague) performed in June and blew everyone away with her unique style of eclectic, personal pop, infused with the wildcat spirit of Brigitte Bardot. Nadéah returns to the Fly by Night in January 2013... Don't miss this show!

What's the thing you're most proud of the Fly By Night has contributed to the music scene in the last year? The opening of The Fly Trap in November 2011 and then the launch of Stage Fright Open Mic in March 2012 have both provided local musicians new opportunities to showcase their music.

What gigs have you got coming up? Well we have our 26th Birthday Party this weekend – Harlem Hussle, plus there's a swag more to sink your teeth into – Ash Grunwald, The Idea Of North, Charlie Musslewhite, Saritah, Dan Sultan, The Saints, The Drifters and heaps more, check flybynight.org for upcoming event info.

What sort of celebration is in order? Harlem Hussle on Saturday 3 November will be a night of funk, soul and Motown tunes from nine-piece big band Stratosfunk, with GoGo dancers, the smooth smooth sounds of DJ Cook and visual masterpieces from VJ Zoo. The De Grussa Soul Experience will not only kick the night off in soulful style, but they will also be taking over Funk & Sound Karaoke in the Fly Trap. Mass shenanigans will ensue! And be sure to dress up Ghetto Fabulous, tailored suits, sequins, beehives and '50s/'60s glamour to be in the running to win prizes.

WHEN & WHERE: Saturday 3 November, Fly By Night
