Review: Willow Beats @ Northcote Social Club
Their final show sold out, and was by all accounts a good'un.. Header Photo: Willow Beats @ Mondo, Perth by Aaron Webber Starting a night of quality Melbourne-based electronica acts, hypnotic trio Yujen graced the stage full of down-tempo melodies and even a sample from Nick Murphy (Chet Faker), the ambient openers ripping through a set that included the impressive single Try It Over. Vocalist Sam Tilley revealing “we showed [Chet Faker] the song and he was searching for someone to sing on it, before just deciding on doing it himself”. With stellar support from brothers Will and Mitch Anderson this is a group to keep an eye on. Alta brought many things to their set; and while an inflatable goon bag was not one of them, somehow a shiny silver bag was still escorted through the crowd as the duo started what was to be a vibrant set. Shifting from mellow vibes to a more charged atmosphere was made possible by frontwoman Hannah Lesser’s ability to showcase a feisty persona and engage the c

Knowing Ry Cuming
Bound to get you excited.. Ry Cuming is an interesting man, he toured as a support act for Maroon 5, was signed to a subsidary label of Sony Music releasing an album and lived in Los Angeles. Originally he came from Angourie which has a population of 170 people, a median age of 47 and is south of Byron Bay. He was making pretty...well awful tracks, like below: But then Ry dropped his major label contract with Sony and the horrendous pop tones when he moved to Berlin in 2012 in which he stated in an interview at the time, "The songs I have released prior have all had some hint of predetermined influence whether from a part of myself or from outside sources. This can be convoluting to the process of communicating who you are as an artist honestly, and also misleading for the people receiving that work." And this is what happened: He essentially became the ultimate hipster. Okay not really but he started the first of three projects which would mark him out as an act to watch. When he ar

Interview - Royal Blood
The buzz may be well-deserved but Royal Blood aren't to sure how to deal with it.. Royal Blood's rise to the top is already becoming mythologised after Arctic Monkeys drummer Matthew Helder wore their shirt when he played at Glastonbury 2013. Furthermore, they were later asked back by the Monkeys to play their two-sold out Finsbury Park gigs. Finsbury Park holds around 40,000 people. That's 80,000 people. Furthermore, they already have over 60,000 fans on Facebook, and only one EP. When Liam Apter spoke with Mike Kerr (lead singer/bassist) and Ben Thatcher (drummer) they took a fairly aloof stance towards questions about their management, debut album, the recording process and coming from Brighton with dead-pan humour. Indeed, it provided a refreshing break that the band could readily joke about whether Batman was alive or not. But it also raised questions about how comfortable Royal Blood are with their newfound stardom, either that or it's really not too high on their agenda at the m

Things We Learnt: Disclosure (Live)
Things you don't know if you didn't go.. We saw Disclosure last weekend, here’s some thoughts from said show. Header photo: Tunnel Vision Support DJ quality is important. Making sure to arrive nice and early, we were pleasantly eased into proceedings from WA duo Genga & Drifter, throwing down some b2b goodness that didn’t go too hard too soon. Errring on the side of “deep house”, with a bit of garagey gear thrown in, a remix of The Kite String Tangle’s Given The Chance was pleasant earlier, while Terace’s re-work of Drop The Game toughened things up nicely towards the end. Wave Racer is a great warm-up act, no matter what genre he’s supporting. The crew we went with weren’t particularly into the kinda music Wave Racer makes (here-on in known as happy trap), in fact the mention of the word ‘trap’ almost instantly caused dry-reaching on their behalf. However, as soon as Wave Racer stepped up to the plate to a rapidly filling venue, all preconceptions were out the window, and maximum boun
