Album Review: The Paper Kites - On The Corner Where You Live

The meditative tales that come from The Paper Kites will sink you deeper and deeper into a world of heartbreak and romance, with broody tempos and delicate melodies, On The Corner Where You Live is devastating, captivating and damn right brilliant.  

The eleven tracks come together to create one hell of a ride, impossible to tune out once you’ve started. It’s got broody tempos and gut-wrenching melodies, exposing intimate and familiar vulnerabilities through its exceptional song writing and instrumentals.   

The band have an incredible ability to turn arguably average tales into spellbinding stories. Like Red Light, a tale of desperation and fight for love; the pain and believability in Sam Bentley’s vocals are haunting.  Then there’s Midtown Waitress, in which the band articulate the emotions and pitfalls that come with ‘all the things we do to make it on our own’.  

It’s got the poignance of a Julien Baker record, or, those evocative feelings Taylor Swift captured most prominently in her 2012 record RED.  On The Corner Where You Live will take you on an immersive and captivating ride, sure to leave you feeling emotionally polarised, a storytelling ability that doesn’t come easy.
