Live Review: Morgan Bain, Datura4, Matty T Wall, Andrew Winton

"The amount of energy in the performance is breathtaking and the climax has everybody in a feelgood mood."

A man renowned for playing the Sipsey river steel with absolute class, Andrew Winton produces some incredible sounds for someone only holding one instrument. The level of talent on display is nearly impossible to comprehend without witnessing the man in action. He starts the night off with some signature riffs on the Sipsey steel, then follows with the jazz/roots tune Can't Slow Down on a standard six-string, his hands dancing through the slow and catchy tune.

The fedora-wearing Matty T Wall explores the frets with his rock'n'roll gang. Impressively fast lead work and lengthy instrumental sections show that these guys really appreciate the art of the blues and rock'n'roll legends before them. The sound of Wall's guitar playing is like Chuck Berry and Reverend Horton Heat combined.

Old timers Datura4 bring heavy blues-tinged music that blows you away. Dom Mariani and Greg Hitchcock wield smooth southern blues riffs and swing rhythms with undertones of Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. This band has carved a unique place in the Perth scene and they're swell at rockin' it.

Perth’s sweet soul legend Morgan Bain presents himself in sharp form with classy smart casual wear and a double bass player. The highlight of the night is when special guest Aysha Amani (The Amani Consort) unexpectedly joins Bain to sing some gospel lines on his phenomenal soul-inspired hit, Searching. The amount of energy in the performance is breathtaking and the climax of the song has everybody in a feelgood mood. The audience can’t resist getting up and dancing to Why Don't You Stay, a song that mixes beat-boxing, hip hop rhythms and Bain’s soul sound, which has attracted great responses from around Australia. Bain plays through a number of his popular hits including Lift You UpIn The Middle and Master Of Minds, giving a masterful show.
