More Morrissey More Morrissey

Morrissey has taken to the Messages From Morrissey section of his website to call out his critics in a new blog post called Cancel Culture Begins At Home. In it, he claimed that there’s been a concerted “media shift” to “delete” him from The Smiths history.

Of course, Morrissey’s voice and songwriting are some of the most memorable aspects of The Smiths’ music, and the band got places with his and guitarist Johnny Marr’s songwriting partnership. There’s no way anybody can listen to The Smiths’ music and not notice Morrissey.

The new post arrived after Morrissey wrote a touching tribute to Mike Hinc, the band’s live booking agent, who recently passed away.

In the blog post, the Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now singer wrote:

There is also an obvious media shift to delete me from being the central essence of The Smiths, but this cannot work because I invented the group name, the song-titles, the album titles, the artwork, the vocal melodies, and all of the lyrical sentiments came from my heart … and so it's a bit like saying Mick Jagger had nothing to do with the Stones.

“Several news sites now claim that the initial meeting at Rough Trade Records was with ‘Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke,’ even though Andy wasn't even a committed band member at that point. The meeting, of course, was Morrissey and Marr. Even [founder of Rough Trade Records] Geoff Travis has now suddenly decided that he ‘can't remember who was with Johnny,’ even though Geoff looked me squarely in the eye on that very day and said, ‘we'd like to release Hand In Glove immediately,’ and he then more importantly said to me that his name was Geoff with a G, not Jeff with a J. The hounds are snapping!

“Hand in glove, I stake my claim! I'll fight to the last breath!

Morrissey recently toured Australia in celebration of 40 years of his career. However, the tour didn’t exactly start smoothly, with the singer abruptly cancelling his first show of the tour in Perth.

Morrissey most recently released 2020’s I Am Not A Dog On A Chain, which was supposed to be followed up last year by an album called Bonfire Of Teenagers. The LP’s release was ultimately cancelled (or, as Morrissey himself claims, sabotaged) in February. Instead, he plans to release a different album, Without Music The World Dies, soon.
