Beloved Sydney Live Music Venue Announces Its Closure
"The current regulatory climate in Sydney and the inherent challenges therein have made it unsustainable."
Popular Sydney live music venue Newtown Social Club has announced it will shut its doors this April.
In a statement on Facebook, the King Street venue said regulations and the associated challenges had made operations “unsustainable".
“Three years since saving the venue from the hands of developers, it is with a heavy heart that Newtown Social Club announces it will be shutting its doors on April 23rd 2017,” the statement reads.
“Whilst the live music part of the business was a resounding success, the current regulatory climate in Sydney and the inherent challenges therein have made it unsustainable. We look forward to exploring new opportunities in the future.”

Run by the team behind iconic Melbourne venues Corner Hotel and Northcote Social Club, the 300 capacity space began hosting live music in 2014, undergoing massive renovations before taking on artists, and has since become a hotspot for local, national and international acts.
Over the next week alone Newtown Social Club will welcome the likes of Ocean Party, Nothing, White Lung and more.
