Australian mega-church Hillsong's new documentary Hillsong: Let Hope Rise has flopped at the US box office, making only US$1.3 million on opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

The film, which chronicles the journey of the church's chart-topping band Hillsong United as well as the rise of the church itself, opened in a limited amount of theatres (only 816 in the US) and averaged $1,663 per theatre, reportedly less than expectations.

Directed by Michael John Warren, the man behind Jay Z's Fade To Black doco, Hillsong: Let Hope Rise went up against Blair Witch, Snowden and Bridget Jones's Baby, the latter of which opened to a whopping US$38.1 million globally and broke the record for UK's biggest launch for a romantic comedy (according to The Hollywood Reporter).

Despite the flop, Hillsong United consistently do well on the ARIA Charts, recently debuting at #3 with their new album, Youth Revival, beating out DMA'S and Hands Like Houses.
