Tame Impala And Courtney Barnett Win Big At 2016 APRA Awards

Phil Barton and Cold Chisel also won some great awards

Taking over Sydney's Carriageworks last night, the 2016 APRA Music Awards presented a slew of our talented musicians top songwriting honours with Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala predictably taking home the biggest awards of the night.

Picking up Song Of The Year with Let It Happen, Tame Impala's Kevin Parker went up against Birds Of Tokyo's Anchor, Barnett's Pedestrian At Best and CW Stoneking's The Zombie. Barnett did take home Songwriter Of The Year though, while 22-year-old Alex Hope took home Breakthrough Songwriter Of The Year, beating out Marlon Williams, Troye Sivan and Gang Of Youths' David Le'aupepe.

Phil Barton picked up APRA's very first Overseas Recognition Award, having penned over 800 songs on records the world over, while Cold Chisel now have the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services To Australian Music to display on their mantlepiece.

Sia — though not present — won Most Played Australian Work Overseas with Chandelier, while Peking Duk and Safia took out the gong for Dance Work Of The Year and Most Played Australian Work with Take Me Over.

Hosted by Brian Nankervis, music's night of nights also saw many amazing performances take the stage — including covers of The Zombie by Guy SebastianLet It Happen by The Delta Riggs, Pedestrian At Best by San Cisco and Gang Of Youths and Montaigne taking on Jarryd James' Do You RememberD.I.G. also dished up a cover of Birds Of Tokyo's Anchor, featuring Ngaiire and 13-year-old singer/songwriter Ruel.
