Who Is WA’s Best Live Act?

Yesterday we brought you a rundown of WAM’s Most Popular Act nominees, and it’s not surprising that a few of those artists are also up for Most Popular Live Act.

We’ve been on the ground and in the thick of it when it comes to top notch live music over the past 12 months, and here’s what we had to say about the six stellar nominees.

Gyroscope

Perth rockers Gyroscope have had a fairly quiet year, so the fact they’ve made this list says a lot about their stage presence. When they take to the stage, things get messy, people bleed and they give it their all. They rounded out 2014 by touring their classic debut record, Sound Shattering Sound, in full, so it’s not surprising they made the cut despite remaining largely quiet this year.

Karnivool

Their albums have changed the face of the Aussie prog-rock scene, but it’s on stage that Karnivool truly shine. They’re another WA act they took their debut record around the country this past year.

“It was incredible to see how far they’ve come in ten years; hopefully there’ll be another ten years of music to come for Karnivool.” Read the full review here.

San Cisco

The indie-pop outfit released their new record, Gracetown, at the start of the year and haven’t slowed down since, touring more throughout Australia than most other bands. They’re a dedicated bunch that keep pushing their boundaries.

Jebediah

Jebediah's anniversary tour earlier this year was always going to see them end up on this list. It’s a true testament to the band’s live energy that they can still rip through their debut record, Slightly Odway, in its entirety all these years later and stuff have the same passions and enthusiasm they did in the ‘90s.

Pond

Pond and its members have had a busy year, branching out into various solo projects and broadening their horizons. So, when they come back together and perform as Pond, they’re unstoppable. That much was clear from the select few Aussie shows they played this year, including a stint supporting Mark Ronson around the country.

“Pond are a top band. Their songs are crafted in a way that allows them to be taken anywhere. There's something rather special about being at their shows and not really knowing what's going to happen or how the gig will play out.” Find out what happened here.

Tame Impala

While we haven’t be treated to many Tame shows this year due to their world domination quest, there’s no denying the Kevin Parker-led psych-rock outfit have mastered the stage, headlining festivals around the world. They embark on a headline tour in November, and we caught them in action at Splendour In The Grass.
