Could Black Mass Be The Film That Turns It All Around For Johnny Depp?

Actor gives chilling performance in new trailer

Away from the big screen, US actor Johnny Depp is currently embroiled in a battle with the Australian Government and is reportedly facing jail time for breaching local biosecurity laws after he illegally brought his two dogs into the country while residing in Queensland to film the new Pirates Of The Caribbean movie.

But moving away from that unfortunate drama, the brand new trailer for the 51-year-old actor's new crime-action film, Black Mass, has dropped and if the clip is anything to go by, Johnny Depp is getting back to his best in a big way.

He stars in the true story as Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most famous criminal in the history of South Boston, though Depp is just only recognisable under the makeup and balding hairstyle.

After the release of some of his worst films in recent years such as Transcendence, The Lone Ranger, Dark Shadows and the most recent and abysmal Mortdecai, Depp looks sharp, focused and quite frankly terrifying in his new role, with fans already speculating of a possible Oscar's nod.

Bulger is assigned by the FBI to become an informant after a Mafia family invades his turf and the trailer which runs just under two minutes to the tune of Rick Ross' The Devil Is A Lie, gives us no doubt that the gangster film is set to be a violent affair.

He is supported by an all star cast as well which includes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Aussie star Joel EdgertonDakota Johnson and Kevin Bacon as well as being directed by Scott Cooper, who directed the acclaimed 2009 drama, Crazy Heart

While it may be too early to call this one a hit, we can only hope this is what brings Depp back to his former glory — we know he is a brilliant actor, but some of his choices in recent years aren't giving us anything to work with. (Who could forget The Tourist?)

Perhaps we can take some sound advice that Bulger gives to his six-year-old son in the trailer: "If nobody sees it, it didn't happen."

Black Mass will be released in Australian cinemas on September 17.
