...Brenda?

Kevin Smith's shamelessly self-indulgent but nonetheless eagerly awaited sequel to his 1995 cult classic Mallrats is swiftly taking shape in the wake of its announcement last week, with original cast members Shannen DohertyJason Lee having their participation in Mallrats 2 confirmed.

Smith has been keeping his fans updated on progress with the film via his social media accounts, counting down to his evident goal of securing 12 cast members from the original film.

In confirming Lee's return on Facebook early this morning (AEST), Smith posted a picture of the actor holding a chocolate-covered pretzel — his character Brodie's signature snack — captioned: "BRODIE IS BACK! So by the end of the year, Jason Lee is coming to the MALL, ya'll! 6 down, 6 to go! Collect 'em all!"

Smith has been announcing additional cast members in much the same way; see his announcement for Doherty — whom Smith acknowledges as having been instrumental in getting the original Mallrats off the ground in the first place — below:

Interestingly, Smith counts six actors as returning to the Mallrats fold - although not a direct confirmation, a recent photo posted by Smith that reunited the director with Jason Mewes, Michael Rooker and master cameo artist Stan Lee on the set of an Audi commercial would put the maths right. Until Smith says otherwise, we're just going to cling to the lofty hope that the four people in this photo will all be back for another round of commerce in the morning.

The spoiling doesn't quite stop for Mallrats fans there, though - Smith has also offered up a little bit of epilogue material to fill in what happened to Brodie and Rene (Doherty) once the credits rolled, so if you're the sort of person to keep an extensive set of headcanon floating around in your brain, here's some fuel for that fire.

Now, if he can just secure Jeremy London (T.S.), Joey Lauren Adams (Gwen), Ben Affleck (Shannon), Claire Forlani (Brandi), Renee Humphrey (Tricia) and... Ethan Suplee (Willam), maybe? ... then we're looking at a damn fine sequel prospect indeed.
