Kevin Smith Confirms Work Is Under Way On 'Mallrats 2'

"By the time we get to May 2016, we're going to be shooting"

Iconic indie director Kevin Smith has confirmed yet another chapter in his cinematic View Askewniverse is in the works, saying in an interview with a US radio station that he is currently working on a sequel to 1995 cult favourite Mallrats.

With fevered speculation beginning to bubble last week after Smith made a social media post about working on Clerks III that included quotable Mallrats quip "I smell a rat", the Dogma and Chasing Amy director was less ambiguous in his interview with Rock 102 Mornings With Shmonty & Carolina, explaining that, although it's still in early stages, "that's what we're working on". "It's half a script right now and we're pulling our loot together. We've got up until the beginning of 2016 ... By the time we get to May 2016, we're going to be shooting."

While Smith acknowledges that "nobody's clamouring for a Mallrats sequel", he told the host that his decision to move forward with the idea stems from a desire to undertake projects that bring him personal - rather than professional - satisfaction.

You can listen to the confirmation of the sequel — it's the host's first question — below.

Mallrats was released 20 years ago this year, and lives infamously as a cult favourite that found its rabid fanbase in droves only once the movie made the leap to home media. With an enduring and endearing cast including an ascendant Jason Lee and a post-90210 Shannen Doherty, as well as regular View Askewniverse contributors Joey Lauren Adams and Ben Affleck - and its still-relatable tale of slackers, commerce, and uncomfortable places - it's somewhat unsurprising that the thirst is still there to see the story picked up two decades on.

Plus, it looks like Smith will at least attempt to bring back former The Walking Dead star Michael Rooker to reprise his role as the unflinching Mr Svenning. And, really, let's not pretend like Brodie wasn't the human blueprint for every pop culture blog on the internet. Snoogins.
