WAAX, The Sinking Teeth To Kick-Start The Foundry's Live Offerings

Brisbane's newest venue and burgeoning creative hub is keeping the focus on quality local acts

Brisbane's fledgling venue and collaborative creative hub The Foundry has just over a week to go until its official launch, but organisers are wasting no time in kick-starting the space's commitment to high-quality, locally sourced music with their first post-launch gig on Saturday, 7 March.

Featuring home-town heroes WAAX and Melburnian friends The Sinking Teeth alongside Brisbanian three-piece Jouk Mistrow, The Foundry's first Saturday night of proper partying is a sub-$15 smorgasbord of DIY punk and post-rock good times that deserves your support and attention — and tickets are easily available via Oztix now.

Rest assured that this will not be even close to the only such Aussie-centric affair staged by The Foundry, with Ben Preece, of key collaborators and tenants Mucho Bravado, explaining of primary venue booker Patrick Balfe: "He's a mad champion of supporting the immediate local scene and then the Australian touring circuit by extension".

"But I think it's safe to say that it's going to be an incredible room that's capable of anything," Preece told theMusic.com.au. "Everyone involved wants to see real 'moments happen' - there are some blank frames on the wall currently that are reserved for these moments."

As Preece explains, the early response to the venue has been largely positive, with most artists and industry figures quick to jump on board.

"The majority have embraced it with open arms so far and have recognised it for what it is - a great collective hub driven by the Brisbane community and local musicians," he said.

As for the reality of bringing together a new, collaborative, uncharted space such as The Foundry, Preece says daily operations so far haven't strayed too far from the original conceit. "Corey Herekihua, the bar manager, is insanely all over it," he said. "We had a soft launch last weekend to essentially test-run the bar, the stage, the sound, the lights etc. Upstairs is coming along quickly - painting is happening and the tenants are frothing to get moved in."

Although we can expect big things from The Foundry in the future - and aside from the previously announced batch of gigs from the likes of Babaganouj, Harts, Hound, Day Ravies and Rolls Bayce - Preece is playing the venue's prospects pretty close to his chest.

"There's always something sneaky to hint at, but not much can be said right now," he teased.

No matter - in addition to the launch show on 6 March with Velociraptor and Spod, as well as this mammoth first post-launch evening of performance with WAAX and The Sinking Teeth, there's plenty on offer in the near future; hit The Foundry's website, theGuide or see The Music App to get across the full spread of scheduled gigs.
