Update on votes in the main categories

With public voting for this year's WAM Awards shaping up to be one of the closest ever, WAM have extended the voting period to 9am WST Monday 28 October so the ebbs and flows at the top of each category can sort themselves out.

Voting is open here across a number of categories including Album/EP Of The Year, Group Of The Year and Solo Artist Of The Year. The Awards' ceremony will be held Friday 8 November.

Here's a quick form guide as the voting enters its final stages, while you can get the straight info on each category and nominee here.

ALBUM/EP OF THE YEAR

If we were rich, we still wouldn't bet on this one, so evenly placed seem some of the contenders. Those popular lads Birds Of Tokyo could fly high, but it wouldn't be weird if Ian Kenny's other ARIA-smashing project Karnivool pinned their wings back. And can either of them fly higher than Tame Impala for their internationally lauded Lonerism? Well, yes, totally. And then throw in the fact that San Cisco won this category with just an EP last year, and suddenly their self-titled album makes this category harder to judge than Tripitaka's sex. Oh, and did we mention Pond? Could Nick Allbrook's move from Tame to focus on firing his own Hobo Rockets pay off instantly? Sheeeeet, this one's tough, though we reck leading WAM nominees The Love Junkies might be able to rehearse during this category to get their set at the WA Music Awards finely tuned.

GROUP OF THE YEAR

Don't get too relaxed though Mitch and co; The Love Junkies are definitely an outside chance for Group Of The Year, partly due to smashing their glorious racket all over Australia just prior to voting going live. It's all about timing people! Emperors' meteoric rise to the rock throne was grand, but when you look at the other contenders in this category it looks like the royal takeover will be a hard ask. Good thing too as we won't want them too hungover for when they play the free Saturday Spectacular the next day… Bets are on between San Cisco, Karnivool, Pond and Tame Impala beating these acts, and The Growl. Bets are also on for it being a Spinning Top act, so that vanishes the 'vool. And considering Tame Impala have already had everyone proclaiming them the biggest act in the world in the last year, Kevin Parker would best be advised to wear some shoes onto the Awards stage this year.

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR

If it were up to us, we'd vote Kučka's mesmerizingly twisted Rewind, but it's not; these awards are up to you. The Love Junkies' donning of ladies outfits and booze showers also puts Maybelene in this category. And The Growl is yet another head-fucking clip that we'd thoroughly recommend, but it seems getting your head screwed these days isn't necessarily as popular as, oh say, a giant sized band creating some psych-ed out images to soundtrack your first acid trip to. Hang on, that sounds fucked up too – must be in fashion! Everybody let's get… um, so,yeah, Tame Impala's Elephant and it's 1.7 plus million views will likely stomp the other contenders out. Though c'mon people, let's vote for the best art here…

SOLO ARTIST OF THE YEAR

No offence dudes, but you had better lift your game if you're to have any chance of even being featured in this category next year, such is the quality of female soloists coming from WA. While Shockone's ARIA #1 dancefloor carnage, Mathas' constant sources of indie-hop Nourishment and Timothy Nelson's magnificent afro are all fine reasons to applaud, we're tipping none of these talents to worry the ladies. After all, can any of the guys say they've been nominated for a Grammy and taken out an ARIA? Georgi Kay can. Can the dudes say they created something as sizzling as Kiss My Apocalypse? No shizzle, they can't. Abbe May can. And none of the guys have Ruby Boots' WAM Award history luck behind them either, Boots taking out Best Country Music Act, Best Folk Music Act and Best Acoustic Roots Act at last year's WAMis. Expect to applaud a powerful and incredibly talented woman in this category. And if it's not Abbe, at least we'll get to see her perform with Mathas at the Awards night.
