They'll be joined by Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains and a whole heap more.

It's upon us, the first of two big Soundwave line up announcements. You might love it, you might hate it, but you can't doubt that it's another pretty incredible looking line up for fans of heavy music.

There's another announcement to come, which will feature 20 bands, one of which will be one of the festival's three big headline artists, so there's that to look forward to.

Green Day leaked the dates on their official website just minutes before the line up was set to be announced this afternoon.

Bands so far are:

GREEN DAY

Pop punk legends turned stadium rock behemoth. They're back in action after some nastiness last year and they'll be bringing a big show to close out the Soundwave events across the nation in February.

STONE TEMPLE PLIOTS

They now have Chester Bennington singing for them and reports from overseas festival are that this has made the band get back to their finest form. Australia finds out for the first time at Soundwave 2014.

ALICE IN CHAINS:

Grunge legends, keeping the dream alive in honour of the dearly departed Layne Staley and continuing to write pretty great music while they're at it.

MEGADETH:

They were the missing link from The Big Four last year, but Megadeth are back in Australia again to show they're still one of the best metal bands around. If you've seen them on the past couple of tours they've done, you'll know it's true.

KORN:

One of the most dominant bands of the nu-metal era are back with a new album, but we have no doubt they'll drop some classics on us when they finally get back to Australia for Soundwave.

ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT:

The recently reformed San Diego rock'n'roll masters haven't been here in over a decade. If you haven't heard of them, become familiar with them, you'll kick yourself if you miss them when they make their way back to Australia.

BARONESS:

There have been some recent hardships in the Baroness camp, but they remain one of those kinds of metal bands of great substance that attract attention from right across the spectrum of different music lovers. We will welcome them back with open arms.

LIVING COLOUR:

We said they probably wouldn't play Soundwave, we were wrong. Just wanna put that out there before some smart arse does it for us.

Also:

AJ Maddah has suggested that Nine Inch Nails would not be the third big band leading the next Soundwave announcement...
