Why Did Jay-Z's 'Holy Grail' & 'Oceans' Cause A Four Day Argument With Kanye West?

Jay-Z won, but it took a while.

Jay-Z recently sat down with BBC Radio's Zane Lowe to discuss all things Magna Carta… Holy Grail in a series of interviews that will play throughout this week.

NME have today revealed that, in part of the interview, Jay-Z admits a couple of his new songs caused a rift between creative collaborator Kanye West and himself, as Kanye wanted two of Jay-Z's new songs to be a part of their 2011 Watch The Throne LP.

“Soon as I thought we had wrapped up Watch The Throne, I made two records - I had Holy Grail and Oceans,” the rapper said.

“[There were] no lyrics on Holy Grail and I recorded Oceans and I played those records for Kanye. And he was like, 'No those have to go on Watch The Throne', so we spent four days arguing about those records.”

The argument may have been lengthy, but Jay-Z says it never really turned nasty and the results show that he got his way in the end.

“Four days, four days literally arguing... not like fighting. Well, there was some pushing at one point but not between us, just everyone else got a little excited.”

Magna Carta… Holy Grail debuted at number one in 59 countries, but only managed to hit the number two spot on the ARIA album charts upon its release last week.
