Meeting Pet Gerbils, Lots Of Mustard & A Wacky Set From Crazy Town: SXSW 2017 Wraps Up

20 March 2017 | 2:09 pm | Various

"I really like mustard."

In our last installment from SXSW 2017, some of our favourite buzzing bands write home about more shenanigans on Sixth Street, the food they've been eating (mustard with a side of hot dog) and all the bands they've been catching (keep an eye on Aquarian Blood!).

Read diary one, two and three here.

See you next year SXSW!

Our second show was at B.D. Riley's, an Irish pub for Sounds Australia's Sound Gallery. Glenn Dickie was the hostess with the mostest, riling up the crowd like a boss.

Nic had to play next to the window in the unusually scorching Austin spring heat. He loves tanning aye.

Was sick sound in there and we had a great show. We love playing cozy venues. Hockey Dad played after us and slayed it as always.

Getting acquainted with the circus of Sixth Street in downtown Austin. So many boozed up people, loads of hip hop crews trying to sell they mixtapes and Nic met a guy walking his gerbils.

Food trucks are amazing everywhere here. We went back to East Austin after our show and Danny took down another tender beef brisket roll. We're getting onto Lite & Easy when we get home.

Wednesday was two shows for us. The amazing crew at Do512 invited us to their office lounge to shoot a live to air thing. We ate fried chicken, played corn hole, got free massages and had siestas. Thanx Ash and Courtney for the hospitality.

Danny in the zzz zone after a massage.

Headed into the Dirty Sixth for our showcase at Dirty Dog Bar. Was loud and fun. We've all lost hearing this week.

Great to see some anti-Trump presence here. We've met so many great people in Austin, a lot of interesting cab drivers who seem to all love or play music. It's an inspiring town.

Thursday we cooked some snags before the Aussie BBQ. Such a great day with so many huge acts playing!

Our set was a lunchtime show at Brush Park in downtown Austin. Was great sound in there. Shoutouts to the Sounds Australia crew again for a well-run event.

The Aussie BBQ hooked up everyone in there with a tasty luncheon, I really like mustard.

Pandora Australia were there, Matty and Jemma were delightful people. Was such an amazing week, first time for Food Court playing overseas. Thanks theMusic.com.au!

Caught a casual (read: totally wacky!) set from Crazy Town at 1.30am. It was one of the wildest things I've ever seen in my life. Come my lady indeed.

Hayden just casually kicking some ninja turtle butt whilst a rap battle happens around the corner.

The Japanese really know how to promote shows. There's a Japanese showcase happening beside the 12XU gig we're playing tonight. Pick up the phone y'all, a good time is calling!

Incredibly difficult to get a good photo at the packed out Beerland, but we caught Radioactivity and they frickin slayed.

We'll be at Beerland for the rest of our lives! Nah but srs we're playing the Goner showcase at 8pm if anyone's about and loves great rock music.

Met my future husband at Beerland, how romantic!

Line up from The Goner Records show we played Saturday night. Do yourself a favour and listen to every band on this list. You can thank me by sending through money for tacos.

The best band in the US, Aquarian Blood slaying at Beerland. Hopefully we will see them in Australia really soon!

And here we are waiting to board a plane back to Australia. The airport is full of feral festival casualties, also devo about heading back to reality. Huge thanks to SXSW for having us! We had a blast! See you soon Aussieland.

Pictured left is our sound guy and spirit guide Charles. We borrowed him from the Chicago band Whitney when they toured Australia and we hit it off. He is a gem.

Here is our great host, gig organiser and all round champ Maya and her mate Frederica. Also pictured: some other weirdos.

A late night stroll through 7/11 reveals a world of wonder. Coffee sizes were Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, and Republican. For real. There was also an extensive range of beer pong balls.

We had a midday show at Cheer Up Charlie's today, right after Marika Hackman and Alex Cameron. Both really tops. Caught Chastity Belt and Trail Of Dead too. We have our last show tonight at Hotel Vegas. For now Joe is lying him some much needed down.

Someone asked us what our goal for SXSW was... free Mimosas.

It's all fun and games until you see a sign for free tattoos.

Just following instructions and taking a few beers.
