Emergent Melbourne six-piece Tempus Sun have unveiled the enchanting video for their evocative debut single, Owls, proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today.
The clip, created by Edwin Tedjokusumo (Eskimo Joe) and starring Rowan Hills and Saiyon Phelan, is an artistically assured accompaniment for the layered sounds of the song itself. It balances enigma and energy in equal measure as Owls likewise builds on its minimal foundations, Ed Borromeo's guitar and Andrew Wortes' vocals gradually being joined by the complementary sounds of fellow vocalist Rya Park, drummer Liam Purser, bassist Sean Close and keys player Grant Hardisty.
The tune is a masterful exercise in mood and sonic movement, slowly growing in scope before opening up to full flight just past the two-minute mark, as Wortes aptly sings, "Speak up, my friend, the time to be heard is now", a line that, according to Borromeo, nicely encapsulates the broader themes of the song.
“Owls is about speaking up about our struggles," he explained in a statement. "It’s a tune relatable to anyone with troubles, be it in the past or ongoing. It was created with mental illness in mind and the intention of influencing people to just have a chat about it with someone.

"Coming from personal experience, something as simple as having a chat is very easy to disregard as helpful, or is easy to procrastinate on, but I found it to be the first step in combatting almost anything.”
The clip, too, is beautifully realised, its settings and composition a brilliantly effective complement to the emotion and elegance of its soundtrack. Said Hardisty of creating the clip:
"Our team has really gone to town in producing something visually beautiful, to match the depth and colour in the single. We had a ton of fun driving around the Yarra Valley and searching for filming locations and eventually settled on the beauty of Redwood Forest in Warburton. Combined with a couple of other locations, the story details the positive progression of mental health through the help of something as simple as speaking out."
Though this is their debut single, Tempus Sun have already made an impact since first convening, taking out the Melbourne Music Bank competition in 2016, which enabled them to go on to record and mix their first EP, along with providing several other boons to a band on the rise.
If you'd like to see them soar in person, Tempus Sun will be launching Owls with a show at The Toff In Town on 30 June. See theGuide for further details.
